SALMON & STEELHEAD FISHING ADVENTURES +1 (250) 635 3022
The Nisga'a People have lived in this region since time immemorial. The First Nation is based in the nearby Nass Valley and the Nisga'a villages of Gingolx, Laxgalts'ap, Gitwinksihlkw, and New Aiyansh are easily accessible along the new Nisga'a Highway.
The Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Park is steeped in native history and is jointly managed by the Nisga'a Nation. 250 years ago the volcano erupted. The lava destroyed everything in its path, sparking fires in the surrounding forests, and covered two Nisga'a villages. More than 2,000 of the Nisga'a people died. Nowadays the vast lava beds serve as a memorial to those who lost their lives and as a reminder of the importance of respect for the natural world.
A self-guided auto tour is available. We can supply the detailed map and there is excellent signage throughout the park to the points of interest. The tour includes waterfalls, Crater Creek, a salmon viewing area, detailed information on the lava formation and cultural background of the eruption. Cross the Nass River on a 400-foot long extension bridge, or simply stop and admire the magnificent pts'aan (totem poles) that tell of Nisga'a history, culture, and clan relationships.
A detailed tour of the volcano cone, guided by a member of the Nisga'a community, should not be missed. For more information see: Nisga'a tourism.
